In the future, users will be able to generate music-related maps from the Native American song database. A simple demonstration is available for European folksongs online. To try out this software follow the following instructions:

1. Open a browser for the music mapping demo by clicking here.
2. In the box labeled "Choose one of these search terms," click on Box #1 and select "ballads".
3. In the area labelled "Map type" select "contour."
4. In the area labelled "Projection" select "Orthographic."
5. Click on the "Submit" button.
6. You may have to wait 1 or 2 minutes while the computer calculates your map.
7. The map you see will plot the distribution of "ballads" in Europe. The light areas indicate regions where a large number of ballads were collected.
